Wild in the Wetlands

This webinar features our field crew of bird suveyors Erik Ost and Matt Longabaugh describing the birds we see and how we do wetland surveys across the state of Missouri. Zeb moderates the discussion and gives a general overview of the scope of the wetland monitoring project. Tune in to learn about some of the most secretive and rare birds in our state, and fun stories from the field! The panel sticks around to answer attendee-submitted questions.

One of the questions led in to a quick discussion about our access of private wetlands and if there is are any groups that help with reconstruction or restoration. Eligible landowners should consult with their local county USDA (Department of Agriculture) service office–or contact someone from the agencies housed there: NRCS (Natural Resource Conservation Service or FSA (Farm Service Agency).

Many of the wetlands we survey are enrolled in the wetland reserve easement programs (WREP/ACE-P), where the above-mentioned agencies along with the Missouri Department of Conservation help private landowners reconstruct permanent wetlands on appropriate land (in a floodplain, poor farming output, etc).
